Welcome to Homeschool Geodes
Interested in the nuts and bolts of homeschooling? Looking for some homeschooling resources that may or may not be available somewhere else? This website is a central clearing house for many of the resources I've put together over the years, handouts from the discussions and talks I've given, and answers I've given to many new homeschoolers' questions. Some of my resources are only applicable in Wake County, NC but some are appropriate for any homeschoolers. Explore and see what works for you.
Starting to homeschool takes courage -- it's a step away from what all your neighbors consider "normal." Your extended family may think it's a crazy idea. Your spouse may take a "wait and see" approach. You can't blame the educational outcome on anyone but yourself (gulp!). However, if you adjust to the new lifestyle and can move away from what "they" expect (whoever "they" are), you may find that it's one of the most rewarding choices your family ever makes.
It's interesting to see the different approach of the "long timers" and the newer homeschoolers in this area. Homeschooling has become such a common choice in this area that it's become one of many educational options and often closely resembles public or private school -- instead of the lifestyle choice that was more common in the past. To really see the benefits of homeschooling, it takes a leap of faith into the mindset and lifestyle where learning happens 24/7 in many non-classroom environments and educational goals really are part of the parent's right to determine, not the local school system. It's OK if your 4th grader doesn't learn your state's history in 4th grade. Explore your state's history when you go past state parks and living history attractions -- regardless of what grade he or she is in!
